thedailyreview.co.nz - a movie critics distorted perspective. http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies The Daily Review - a critics distorted review of todays movies. Mon, 31 Aug 2009 08:26:40 +0000 http://wordpress.org/?v=2.6.1 en Hustle and Flow http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=117 http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=117#comments Fri, 16 Jan 2009 12:30:08 +0000 Movie-Man http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=117 I had a pile of oldy dvd’s racked up to watch and as usual i judged the book by the cover, 3 words “what a twat” after leaving this one till last i am even more convinced the cover doesn’t mean shite.

Hustle and flow a drama to start but hey I will give anything a go, at first i thought what a load of bollocks, but as open minded as i am, I thought to myself give it the chance it deserves; anyway i did and it was the best thing i did that week, it starts out a bit slow but works its way up to a story, thank baby jebus.

anyways, a classic 2005 flick about a chap who busts bugger all and his biartches do all the work (you got it he’s a PIMP) working his women and reaping a penny a handjob, not a career choice to take you too far, but for this character it pays 90% of the bills so he sticks with it, yadda yadda yadda so onward this chap decides he wants to make music in this case RAP.

yeah not my first choice but good, there is a story on every street, but the storyline unfolds and much like a persuit of happiness story, this chap busts for the first time his head, brains and every other asset he has to make a hit, it goes off; after all the hardships and pain steaking agony of no budget, no props and bugger all of anything it makes for a good story, however the ending is not the fairytale we would all expect, give it a wurl this was a good film a bit slow but well worth the watch.

Get into it.

Revolver http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=115 http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=115#comments Fri, 16 Jan 2009 01:04:02 +0000 Movie-Man http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=115 Oh what a crackpot head spin this flick was, the bloke from the transporter films, forget his name now, farkin useless i am remembering names these days, Anyways he’s a top  actor, he’s got game
Its all about the con, well how to con a con who cons a con. (mind fucked yet !) without giving anything away.

Shite I don’t really know how to tackle this one, at most points of this film i had no idea where the bloody hell i was, it was a tough note to shift, full of mind deranging twists and turns and roundabouts it just had me in a weird mood i didnt know whether to laugh, cry or shit myself; it really took its toll on the old brain hemisphere left right out !

Well if you like to have a headache after a good old right off of a storyline and grandad is starting to bore the tits off you, have a crack at this one, it will blow your nipples off and confuse tha balls off a rhino.

Saying all that I did enjoy sitting down and challenging my brain in a way it has never been challenged before, check it out see if you feel it.

Flushed Away http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=113 http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=113#comments Fri, 16 Jan 2009 00:55:38 +0000 Movie-Man http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=113 Roddy the rat, what a cracker, i reckon if you’ve got kids; and they have not yet seen this, pop down to your local video store, put yer feet up and watch this one with them on a rainy day.

Like most animated CGI kids films today, this was as good as they get; a tale of a house rat who sets off in adventure to the dark depths of the london underground, (the sewers) and meets a bunch of crazy ass characters along the way, its got farts and laughs for the whole family.

The characters in flushed away are brilliant and all play a significant part in the storyline as Roddy heads through stinky infested waterways looking for adventure and a way back home to revenge his arch nemesis (well Should be) SID the Sewer rat pal who takes his place in his ponce hometown estate.

flushed away pulled my pants down cracked me on the ass and spanked my funny bubble, as i pissed my self laughing watching the singing slugs and ninja toads, what a farkin laugh; anyways this was a top 3d film get up and grab a copy even buy one for those rainy days, this is good material folks. check it out !

Wanted http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=111 http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=111#comments Fri, 16 Jan 2009 00:43:53 +0000 Movie-Man http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=111 This was much more than just a cheap date, what at first seemed to be a next “disaster movie” had me pinching the armrest of the lazyboy armchair.  what a frickin rush, not too mention the hot to handle appearance by no other than the stunning angelina, who appears to have an eating disorder during the hot and steamy bath scene.

Give a hot chick a gun and you get action packed, pimp sweating, adrenalin pumping, hard core bullets glazing, heavy metal, heart wrenching killer instinct ACTION BABY. The shoot up scenes in this bad boy are a CGI dream come true, what seems to be another NEO ‘VS’  the matrix style storyline ends up with some sustenance, Boys and girls get on yah rockers, pop a cap off the old brewsky and kick back, (turn this shit up load) it boasts a buffet of both audio and visual effects that will take the wrinkles out of your forehead.

Anyways despite the reviews by others I generally rocked out with this film, It had a little something called in depth originality, with all its efforts to be just another matrix wanna be’s, I had a kick ass time watching this it had a bit of everything for everyone. If you get the time put this bad boy or girl to rest and plonk yourself in front of the telle.  ROCK ON !

Witless protection http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=109 http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=109#comments Tue, 16 Dec 2008 07:42:51 +0000 Movie-Man http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=109 What a way to end a day in the office, just when i had left this one to last, thinking it had nothing to offer,
What starts out as a complete piss-take of the film industry actually ended up being a hillbilly barrel of laughs, make way eye of the tiger, this bad boy just took top of the charts.

When a hillbilly cop dreams of much bigger things than his small town hiccup’s of a cops life, he takes matters into his own hands and kidnapps a blond bombshell in hopes of making the big time in crime busting, but what he doesn’t realise is he just stepped into a circle of ntrust and mayhem.

I couldn’t recommend this film more, if you have had a rubbish day or night, flop out your bundy and kick your feet up, your in for a ride of classic and new groove humour, it’s like a scary movie but the storyline is actually a story and there is a plot. however there is not as much cheese for the nacho’s, which is just great.

Well get motivated people this one is a sure laugh and a half, happy couching.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=105 http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=105#comments Sat, 13 Dec 2008 12:07:36 +0000 Movie-Man http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=105 Well I have to say, I have had some interest in Jesse James for some time and tried as beest as possible to draw the good from the bad, but i have to say this was good from afar, but far from good. Like i always do; i gave this one the glory of seeing it through to the end, but was definately mind fucked right the way through.

I was somewhat drawn to the characters they were fairly straight up the storyline was something to be said for, not all of what i saw in this film i have belief in, but who the bugger really knows the truth aye.
I mean lets be honest Brad Pitt as Jesse, wouldnt have been my first choice, Jesse was not a farkin pretty boy, that is very clear. but hey he did do an ok job.

Well this should be one for the boredom of a sunday avo if you have a few hours to spare and nothing better to watch, but it is pretty interesting, dont follow the facts this version is just a fairytale on screeen.

Crash http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=103 http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=103#comments Tue, 09 Dec 2008 21:33:11 +0000 Movie-Man http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=103 Crash, was a riot of plots and intertwined twists, never have i come across such  freak of the silver screen, hooraa to the writers, this would have had your pens in game of hide and go seek.

What starts as a simple and mindless beginning to what seems to be a family flick of cops and robbers ends up being racial battle and a gangland fueled mindtrip for only those who are worthy.

I had a brilliant time watching this one, i didn’t even need the popcorn, there was plenty of brain food and it didn’t stop coming, if you got a pinch in your nerve for a movie you can’t take your eyes off this will surprise you and excite you.

Mongol http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=101 http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=101#comments Tue, 09 Dec 2008 21:22:18 +0000 Movie-Man http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=101 Of all the national geographic and discovery documentaries i have seen of Ghengas Khan and his life, Mongol was a good starting point and nothing more, the directors of this film need a hot iron, across the face.

I did enjoy watching this film the action scenes were great, and the emotion came across well, it just really pisses me off when you are cut short of a full story, the beginning was excellent, it gave very clear indication of the hardships Young Khan went through, until 1186 from thee all was lost and the film seems to take major leaps and bounds into the final days of hi regime,  you get a good feel for who he was, but in my opinion you miss all the good bits.  i gave this movie a 3.5 out of 5, but you be your own judge.

Quantum of Solace http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=96 http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=96#comments Fri, 05 Dec 2008 00:55:10 +0000 Movie-Man http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=96 Went to the silver screen for this one, and thank the baby jebus himself i was def in one ear due to a middle ear infection, IT WAS VERY LOUD. which to say the least; was awesome.

if your a 007 fan this is a must see, action action action, they must have had to shoot some of the scenes in this film 100’s of times just to get close to anything usable. Quantum of Solace is by far a better direction for Bond movies, putting the stealth and Casanova back into the routine, long gone have the cheesy days of Pearce Brosnan 007 impressions. (no offence pearce).

well super hot babes for breakfast, lunch and dinner, bombs, guns and FIRE, make up the dna of the storyline anything in between is just bonus.

All the key actors following through in Quantum, so familiarity is prent, only a few newbies, with the exception of the hotties, standard issue refresh there.

Well if you have seen it, post you comments, if not; get your behind to the big screen and get on with it.

Detonator http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=94 http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=94#comments Sun, 23 Nov 2008 21:45:59 +0000 Movie-Man http://thedailyreview.co.nz/movies/?p=94 Guns, bombs and bitches, a Wesley Snipes classic who would have thought a snipes film could have such a shit storyline, not to mention the small budget effects, i was pretty disappointed with this one, thank baby jebus, i set off on this flick right before  went to sleep.

Well theest part of this film is the female actress who plays a helpless wife to the toughest gun runner in America, well maybe just the state the movie is set, anyways, When she hit the screen all could do was wait in anticipation in the hope her rack would find its way in front of the camera, ..  Didn’t happen, the directors must have thrown her in at the last minute to keep you from walking out of the movie, i sure as hellwould have had she not played the gun runners hottie.

Oh well besides the criticism,  as i do i gave it  chance and watched it till the end
